NOTES FROM PREVIOUS RETREATS

May 20-22, 2005
March 20, 2005

"From time to time, we can set aside some time for a retreat or day of mindfulness so we can sit, walk slowly, smile, eat lunch with friends, and enjoy being together as though we are the happiest people on Earth. This is not just a retreat, it is a treat."
- Thich Nhat Hanh

Throughout the year, designated Sundays are set aside as a Day of Mindfulness. It is a day of practice open to all friends who would like to join us. When you practice mindfulness, you are not judging, reflecting or thinking. You are simply observing the moment in which you find yourself. Mindfulness enhances the power of the meditation experience, and helps us heal, achieve change, and reduce stress in our day-to-day lives.

A Mindfulness Day begins at 9a.m. with sitting meditation & walking meditation, and silent lunch. In the afternoon there are activities such as group discussions, tea meditation or other group activity which conclude at approximately 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Please arrive early, before 9:00 am, so you have time to settle in, to more deeply benefit from the energy of the community, and the practice.

We welcome you to come and practice with us, for a Day of Mindfulness.
Please email us in advance to be assured of scheduling, transportation arrangements, accommodations, etc.
We do need to know how many people will be attending, so that there is enough food for all.
Please let us know if you plan on attending!

Please check here regularly for upcoming events and scheduling changes.

** Mindful or Silent lunch is a quiet time of observance. Before eating, the bell will be invited for three sounds and we can enjoy breathing in and out while practicing the five contemplations.

The Five Contemplations

The following verses are often recited before meals. They were written by Thich Nhat Hanh, based on traditional Buddhist teachings.

1. This food is the gift of the whole universe: the earth, the sky and much hard work.

2. May we live in a way that makes us worthy to receive it.

3. May we transform our own unskilled states of mind and learn to eat with moderation.

4. May we take only foods that nourish us and prevent illness.

5. We accept this food so that we may realize the path of understanding and love.

Eating in silence, the food becomes real with our mindfulness and we are fully aware of its nourishment. In order to deepen our practice of mindful eating and support the peaceful atmosphere, we remain seated during this silent period.
We arrange to have food provided for this day, and if you wish to bring something to share with others, you are welcomed to do so.
