Mindfulness is one of the treasures of human nature. Everyone has a natural
capacity to be mindful, which means to be present in the here and now, to be
truly present without wanting anything else. It is only because of countless
habits of thought and action which we have acquired during our life as well as
inherited from our forebears that we find it difficult to be present.

Leonard West, is a Memphis based artist and Zen practitioner,
ordained at Deer Park Monastery by Dhyana Master Thich Nhat Hanh into the Order
of InterBeing is a Memphis artist who shares some of his life as follows:
"I am of African and Native American heritage, born in Chickasha,
Oklahoma ....grew up in Los Angeles, California in the 40’s ...was a
bohemian-beatnik of the 50’s ..lived seven years in rural Nara, Japan among the
people. ...study and practice Zen Buddhism ...proudly served twenty years in my
beloved U.S. Marines Corps … was a passionate "servant to the people" in the
60’s Black Panther Party of Los Angeles-Stockwell … was a graphics cameraman in
advertising for a Memphis-based international corporation. I approach my art of
thirty-plus years, playfully, I seek to reflect the joy and wonder of "little
people" (i.e. children) and my enduring faith in the power of spiritual
evolution to transform humanity."
One of the key elements to success in leading
a more mindful life is to practice mindfulness. Practice is a word that suggests
activity. The activities which produce mindful awareness are practiced through
relationships. Relationships with yourself, your loved ones, your community, and
the world. A practice center offers people a community of like-intentioned
friends to come together with to deepen their understanding. In this type of
community the art of mindful living is explored through shared insights, study
and practice.
